چکیده

|The results obtained from the application of a genetic algorithm, GENEsYs, to the NP-complete maximum independent set problem are reported in this work. In contrast to many other genetic algorithm based approaches that use domain-speciic knowledge, the approach presented here relies on a graded penalty term component of the tness function to penalize infeasible solutions. The method is applied to several large problem instances of the maximum independent set problem. The results clearly indicate that genetic algorithms can be successfully used as heuristics for nding good approximative solutions for this highly constrained optimization problem.

A novel evolutionary formulation of the maximum independent set problem

We introduce a novel evolutionary formulation of the problem of finding a maximum independent set of a graph. The new formulation is based on the relationship that exists between a graph’s independence number and its acyclic orientations. It views such orientations as individuals and evolves them with the aid of evolutionary operators that are very heavily based on the structure of the graph an...

Evolutionary Algorithms for Vertex Cover

This paper reports work investigating various evolutionary approaches to vertex cover (VC), a well-known NP-Hard optimization problem. Central to each of the algorithms is a novel encoding scheme for VC and related problems that treats each chromosome as a binary decision diagram. As a result, the encoding allows only a (guaranteed optimal) subset of feasible solutions. The encoding also incorp...

Solving a New Multi-objective Unrelated Parallel Machines Scheduling Problem by Hybrid Teaching-learning Based Optimization

This paper considers a scheduling problem of a set of independent jobs on unrelated parallel machines (UPMs) that minimizesthe maximum completion time (i.e., makespan or ), maximum earliness ( ), and maximum tardiness ( ) simultaneously. Jobs have non-identical due dates, sequence-dependent setup times and machine-dependentprocessing times. A multi-objective mixed-integer linear programmi...

Solving the Fixed Charge Transportation Problem by New Heuristic Approach

The fixed charge transportation problem (FCTP) is a deployment of the classical transportation problem in which a fixed cost is incurred, independent of the amount transported, along with a variable cost that is proportional to the amount shipped. Since the problem is considered as an NP-hard, the computational time grows exponentially as the size of the problem increases. In this pape...

Heuristic approach to solve hybrid flow shop scheduling problem with unrelated parallel machines

In hybrid flow shop scheduling problem (HFS) with unrelated parallel machines, a set of n jobs are processed on k machines. A mixed integer linear programming (MILP) model for the HFS scheduling problems with unrelated parallel machines has been proposed to minimize the maximum completion time (makespan). Since the problem is shown to be NP-complete, it is necessary to use heuristic methods to ...
